Curator Diane Xing focuses on hybrid media narratives as well as biological and ecological topics. By facing the chaotic present with an uncertain future, Diane Xing believes that we need technologies that are rooted in our everyday lives and we should reconsider the current correlation between humans and things towards this pragmatic action.

The theme of Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech 2022 was "Disruptive Futures", under which the curators were invited to rethink the role of disruptive technologies, thereby envisioning possibilities for the future. The exhibition Balcony of the Brave  Nutrition, Materials, and Future Ecology engages with the theme by looking into present reality rather than hastily fantasizing about the unknown future. Diane Xing presents a slice in the lives of “braveness” when facing and confronting challenges, with the "balcony" alluding to a technological and ecological platform that allows audiences to readily participate in the discussion of future life and the relationship between mankind and nature. The exhibition consists of four sections - nutrition converters, material makers, garden planters, and stargazers - in distinctive perspectives.

The exhibition will last until August 28, 2022. During the exhibition, audiences are encouraged to interact with the artworks and participate in public programs to start a journey to the future in a collective action.

In addition, Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech 2023 announces the theme ‘Decentralized Reworlding’ to drive critical thinking on decentralized life in the era of the metaverse, distributed networks, decentralized economies, and generative, responsible AI.

“In a bold new initiative, the Hyundai Blue Prize will continue to encourage investigation of the complexity of the social system and rethinking the current boundaries of our social norms and human territories, said DooEun Choi, Art Director of Hyundai Motor. “The Hyundai Blue Prize 2023 will nurture the creative and critical forms of re-worlding through the arts, technology, and humanities that must be in action to sustain our decentralized life.”

Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech established in 2017 expands boundaries by inviting senior and junior juries in various fields, audiences and media industry representatives in the judging process to open new conversations. Open call and nomination of Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech 2023 end on July 12, 2022.

In order to support the five shortlisted curators in their innovative research and application practices, the senior jury will conduct one-on-one mentoring sessions. The senior jury members include Joel Ferree (Program Director of Art & Technology Lab, Los Angeles County Museum of Art), FEI Jun (Professor, Doctoral supervisor, Art + Technology program, School of Design, Central Academy of Fine Art), HOU Hanru (Writer and Curator, Artistic Director of MAXXI), Christiane Paul (Adjunct Curator of Digital Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art), and Stephanie Rosenthal (Director of the Martin Gropius Museum). Each of them will receive a CNY 30,000 cash prize and a series of international exchange activities to develop their initial proposals in depth. A grant of RMB 600,000 will be offered to the final two awardees to realize their selected proposals at Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing.

Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech aims to provide an international platform for participants to cultivate emerging curators through exchange, research, observation, and discussion and support artists` unlimited potential.
